Instead of counting on low-level device improvements from the semiconductor industry, processors are increasingly heterogeneous, using specialized accelerators to increase performance. Simultaneously, big-data is enabling new applications that consume terabytes of data in real-time, and the Internet of things is enabling developers to reach millions of devices. Computer architecture research is going to play a vital role in continuing the information revolution by bridging the gap between emerging applications and the underlying physical technology.
